Breakdown Services: What Green Flag Offer

Green Flag started in 1971 as a network of garages rather than employed patrols, and that is still how it works — it draws on a network of around 3,000 technicians rather than running its own national patrol fleet. Cover comes as either an any-driver policy attached to the car, or an any-vehicle policy attached to the person.

Green Flag Rescue

The roadside assistance level. A technician attempts a repair where you have stopped; if that is not possible the car is taken to the nearest garage. Worth knowing that this is often the same garage that attended the callout.

Rescue Plus

Adds at-home cover to the basic Rescue service, for a breakdown at or close to home.

Recovery

Covers your car and its passengers being taken anywhere in the UK if it cannot be fixed at the roadside.

Recovery Plus

All the national recovery benefits plus onward travel — hotel costs, car hire or alternative transport if the car cannot be repaired in time.

Euro Plus

UK and European cover combined, for driving on the continent.

Route planner

In line with the other providers, Green Flag offer their own route planner.

Watch the vehicle age limits. Green Flag applies age caps that the other two do not push as hard. Its personal cover is stated as being for vehicles under 16 years old, and Euro Plus for vehicles under 25. With the average UK car now around ten years old and over 40% of cars past the decade mark, this rules more vehicles out than it used to — check the limit against your car before you compare on price.

The Garage Network Trade-Off

Because Green Flag works through contracted garages rather than its own patrols, the experience varies more by area than it does with the AA or RAC. In a well-covered area it is fast and cheap; somewhere remote at 2am it depends entirely on who is available locally. That is the trade for the lower price, and it is worth reading reviews for your own region rather than national ones.

It also matters for what happens next. An employed patrol has no interest in where your car ends up; a garage that recovers your car to its own premises may then quote for the repair. Neither is sinister, but knowing which model you have bought helps.

Who Owns Green Flag?

Green Flag sits within Direct Line Group, which was itself acquired by Aviva in July 2025. So the smallest of the big three brands is now part of one of the largest insurers in the country.
